Blackboard Known Issues

Article ID: ITSKB-3-202

Article Purpose

Known Issue:
Phishing Attempts Redirect Users to a Fake Blackboard Site which could allow Information Disclosure

Symptoms:

There have been no reports of this at UAA.  Blackboard Inc. has received reports that phishing attempts are being sent out to Blackboard users via email that appear to be legitimate Blackboard addresses. This address redirects users to a phishing site that mimics a Blackboard site where users can be tricked into logging in and giving hackers their credentials.

There are several variations of the reported attempt, below is an example:

Suggestion:
Go directly to UAA's Blackboard URL, https://blackboard.uaa.alaska.edu/, instead of clicking links in suspicious emails.  If you have questions, please contact the Call Center at 907.786.4646, 877.633.3888, or via email at callcenter@uaa.alaska.edu.

Known Issue:
Incompatibility of Web Browsers that do not support NPAPI Plugins
In September 2015, Google Chrome will stop supporting NPAPI browser plugins.  This includes the use of Java in the web browser as well as most media player plugins.

Symptoms:
When authoring with the Content Editor in Blackboard Learn, an author can embed media files such as Quicktime, Windows Media, and Flash.
The playback of these contents requires browser plug-ins for viewing.

Workaround Instructions:
Use a browser that supports NPAPI media plugins for viewing embedded media files, such as Firefox or Internet Explorer.
